Labor day is here!

It’s funny how this particular day can evoke a different emotion for everyone and way to spend it. For instance for some;

  • A beach party in the Hampton’s
  • Family barbecue overlooking the ocean
  • One last trip up north for some fresh country air

All trying to savor that very last summer feeling as we […]
embark upon a new season.

Then there are those that get really serious and or overwhelmed that vacation time is over and start this series of tasks or thought processes that go something like this;

  • I must balance my budget
  • Should I keep the same job
  • Why don’t I live somewhere where it’s warm all year
  • I can’t believe summer’s over
  • It always goes by so fast
  • I should have taken more time to…
  • I’ve got to make a more gratifying plan for this winter
  • I need more me time

Then of course there are those that just go with the flow. Nothing phases them. Another day, another week, another year… But that’s not us! Right? We want to feel, alive, make a difference, touch a life and make every moment worth remembering.

As the years pass believe me, it’s not all those big things that you think are so important now that will actually make a difference, most of them you won’t even remember.

It’s all those little special moments… That will stay with you forever and create your gift of life.

So although some are going to the Hampton’s for Labor day weekend there can be two different mind sets at the same beach.

The Great Mind That Sets Us Apart

Some people can be enjoying the moment because it’s another beautiful day worth living while taking advantage of the time they can spend with family or friends, feeling totally grateful for all that they have in their life.

While others… At the same beach will walk around moping that summer is over. And instead of enjoying what they have in front of them right now in this moment, they will thinking of the past which is gone.

So how do you chose one?
Or is there yet another way?

Yup, there certainly is! And I’m not only going to tell you about it, I’m going to give you some practical steps you can do right now to get into that mind set and make it happen.

For most, Labor day evokes thought. Some positive, some negative, but your definitely thinking.

When you think you naturally ask yourself questions like;

  • Should I have done that?
  • What did she mean by that?
  • Why does this always happen to me?
  • Do you think that interview went well?
  • Should I exercise?
  • Could I have DONE that more incredible? (Sometimes not vain, but true)

Now, when you ask yourself a question, your mind searches it’s data of past experiences for the answer, and do you think you will come up with a different answer depending on how you ask the question? You bet!

For instance if you ask yourself, why am I always so tired and lifeless?

You may come up with answers like;

  • I hate my job
  • I hate my life
  • I work to hard
  • There’s nothing exciting going on
  • I work just to pay my bills
  • I have nothing to look forward to…


Now, try asking yourself the same question like this…

What can I do to feel more alive, have more energy
and feel totally vibrant all the time?

Now, you may get an answer like this,

  •  Make a plan with a dietician so I can eat the proper foods that are healthier and give me more energy
  • Join a gym and get a trainer
  • Take up a sport I’ve always wanted to play that will give me exercise and enjoyment
  • Stop checking my emails and shut the computer at 10 pm instead of 2 am and so on…

You see how by just asking the right question, can give your answer and result a whole new outcome?

That’s why I’m writing this special Labor day post.

In more than wishing you a Happy Labor day in it’s traditional sense, I want to give you something new to think about this Labor day that will make it special and meaningful and actually put a smile on your face.

It doesn’t have to mean, “Bye Bye Summer”, it could be a whole new way of enjoying fall and making Winter sunny.

Are you ready?
Put on your sun glasses, roll down your sunroof and enjoy cruis’n through,

“Making Summer last all year long 101”.

Let’s start by making a list of some of the summer stuff we do and or look forward to all year.

I want you to actually make this list, it will help your mind kick into gear and prepare you for the next step.

I’ll get you started here…

As mid Spring approaches and the days get longer, the bright sun and warm breeze make us feel exuberant. We start getting that summer bug and sudden feeling like the whole world is smiling upon us and all possibilities are endless.

You start doing all these wonderful things like;

  • Put air in your bicycle tires and take it for a spin
  • Go to your favorite sports shop an pick up the latest Nike outfit so you can jog in style
  • Get a canopy for your porch so you can read in the shade
  • Invite your friends over for that first barbecue
  • Find a local pool so you can swim and tan at the same time
  • Take up tennis lessons
  • Rent a Chalet by the lake
  • Put up that sign… ” Gone fishing”

I think your starting to get the idea here.

Making Your List

As you make this list, (don’t skip this part, it’s important) I want you to reflect on each and every one of those things. Put yourself back in that moment. Feel the wind in your hair, smell the flowers, taste the barbecue, feel the warm ocean breeze, feel your heart racing as you get that rush while you’re running, FEEL, FEEL, FEEL!

Now, here’s what I want you to do. When you finish that list all of the fun stuff you look forward to doing every summer and those you actually got around to doing I want you to make the second list. This list is the enlightening one, the list that will make it all happen for you, bring it all together and make Summer last all year long but first, I want to ask you a question.

What do all the things on your list no matter how diverse, or the one I gave you as an example have in common?

Yes, there is one common denominator that tie all those activities together although some may seem worlds apart.

You can say;

  • It gives me energy
  • It’s a way for me to relax
  • Keeps me sane
  • A way to get healthy
  • Time to connect with loved ones
  • Opportunity to learn a hobby
  • Way to perfect a sport
  • Finally doing something for me

Yes, they’re all true but the one thing they all have in common is…

Emotion… The feeling you get from doing any one of these activities.
It’s really not rocket science. Everything we do is driven by emotion, the way we feel, the way we want to feel and the results we’re after, again, the way it will make you feel.

I can expand more on this but for now, it is beyond the scope of this post topic however, if it is something you would like me to expand upon, please leave me a comment.

Finally the fun stuff, the second list.

After you complete the first list, take a look at it and begin your second list item by item. Start writing down all the alternatives you can do now that it’s Fall or going into Winter to get that same feeling or result.

Whether it was fitness, energy, hobbies, or a sport there will be a solution. And although snow may be falling outside but your heart, mind and soul will be filled with sunshine.

I’ll help get you started from the examples on my list;

  • Find a local gym, they have bikes and fans (bring you iPod, optional)
  • All sports shops have that “summer end” sale, go take advantage pick up that something special now for your ‘new summer’
  • Grab your favorite book and head for those skyscraper hotel lounges. See the city view from the 28th floor
  • Google your local grill restaurants and put the date in your schedule book
  • Find the YMCA or club closest to you and schedule your weekly swim time
  • Continue that tennis fun in any indoor city court
  • Have you ever seen the movie “grumpy old men”? There is definitely winter fishing!


As you start to work your way through your fun summer list you will begin to recognize a pattern that will not only reveal that the summer fever need not end but, a feeling of excitement and possibilities that are similar to those of mid Spring.

Let Labor day have a new and exciting meaning. Although the days are shorter, with our new plan, they will be filled with summer fun and vibrancy all year long.

Your challenge will now be, when spring comes along… “How do I top the great Summery Winter I just had” :)?!
